SCRANTON, Pa. — On June 5, a South Carolina man was sentenced to 14 years in prison for assaulting three federal correctional officers at the United States Penitentiary, Canaan, in Wayne County.

Thomas Waters, 37, is already serving a 10-year sentence for being in possession of a firearm.

United States District Judge Malachy E. Mannion ordered the 14-year sentence be added on directly to the end of Waters current sentence.

Waters assaulted an officer on January 18, 2023, after being counseled for breaking a rule, hitting the officer repeatedly on the head with his fists and at one point using the officer's own baton. When two other officers came to help, he bit them in the arm and leg.

All three officers required medical treatment.

After a three-day trial in January, Waters was found guilty on February 5 for three counts of assaulting a federal officer.
