FRANKLIN COUNTY, Pa. — Franklin County Police are warning residents of a reported rise in criminal activity.
According to the Chambersburg Police Department, officers have noticed an increase in criminal activity in the area of Southgate and the Rail Trail from E. Washington Street to S. Main St.
CPD has increased the number of patrols in and around the area, both on foot and in their patrol cars.
Citizens have been asked to report any activity or persons they feel are suspicious.
Additionally, officers are reminding residents that the Rail Trail is closed from dusk to dawn to all pedestrian traffic. For those who must walk or travel along the trail, follow the following safety tips:
- Always carry a fully charged cell phone with 911 capability.
- Always carry a flashlight with fresh batteries.
- Always be very cognizant of your surroundings, including persons who may be around you.
- Minimize any distractions, such as talking on a phone or texting or wearing earbuds that limit outside noise.
- Stay in well-lit areas.
- Walk, run, or travel with a group of people.
- Notify family or friends of your general location and an expected time of return.
On Friday, March 15, officers responded to the area of the Rail Trail between S. Main Street and South Street. The victim was hit over the head with a large piece of wood and was suffering from a serious head injury.
