HARRISBURG, Pa. — Police in Harrisburg are working to figure out who shot a 19-year-old mother and her unborn child Monday evening.
They say it happened at N. 4th and Woodbine Streets, where a large group of people, some as young as three and four years old, had gathered.
There was no 911 call because police were just blocks away and heard the gunfire themselves.
Officers say multiple shots were fired.
It's not known how many hit 19-year-old Tyemeshia Miller, who authorities say was approximately five months pregnant with a baby boy.
“That shows the lack of regard for public safety and human beings when [people are] that cavalier and that flamboyant when they’re going to go out and open fire on a crowd of people with police officers in marked cars half a block away," said Lt. Kyle Gautsch of the Harrisburg Bureau of Police.
“I am so sick and tired of saying it’s a tragedy. Yes it’s a tragedy but how are we going to stop it?" added Police Commissioner Thomas Carter, who was visibly emotional over Monday's incident. "Yesterday we had a whole detail out with my street crimes unit. We had the state police out, my street crimes unit working side by side to stop incidents like this.”

Police say right now, they have few leads.
While a lot of people were in the area at the time of the shooting, few have come forward with information.
"Please, please, please, on behalf of the unborn child can we please do something about this here," said Commissioner Carter.
Commissioner Carter said Tuesday he ordered public works staff to trim some of the overgrown brush in the area around Atlas Street, the next road over from where Monday's shooting happened.
He said based on information officers received at the scene, it's possible the shooter, or shooters, fled in that direction. By trimming the overgrown brush and weeds, he said it could help them possibly find a weapon if one was dropped.
This shooting comes after less than two weeks ago when another deadly shooting occurred on Woodbine Street near a grocery store.
27-year-old Christian Watt was killed last Friday, and police arrested Jerome Coleman Jr. in connection to the shooting.
There was a community cleanup on Monday in response, where organizers cut grass, picked up trash and pulled up weeds to clean up the Governor's Square Neighborhood.
