LANCASTER, Pa. — The Lancaster Bureau of Police on Monday announced it partnered with the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office to crack down on panhandling and drug use in the downtown area.
The crackdown was in response to reports of increased drug use and aggressive panhandling in and around Binns Park and other public areas in the city, police said.
The effort led to the arrest of five people on various criminal charges, including disorderly conduct, possession of K2 (a synthetic marijuana), public drunkenness, harassment, and related offense, police said in a press release.
In addition, police said, 14 others were arrested on outstanding summary warrants.
In all, a total of 88 warrants were served, according to police.
"Maintaining the safety and health of our welcoming public spaces is vital to ensuring everyone can enjoy and access the downtown investment district without concern," the police department said in a statement. "Efforts like this aim to address criminal behavior while supporting a safe environment where all Lancaster City residents, visitors, and businesses can thrive."
