LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. — Officials in Lancaster County are investigating an officer-involved shooting that left one dead early Sunday.
According to the Lancaster County District Attorney's Office, the incident occurred at the Northwest Regional Police Department on Elizabethtown Road in Elizabethtown at 1:43 a.m.
39-year-old Andrew Ward of Elizabethtown was pronounced dead at the scene despite life-saving measures.
According to the Lancaster County DA's Office, the incident occurred on Nov. 3 after Ward showed up at the police station. Officers from the department had contact with Ward at around 9:45 p.m. on Saturday evening when he was arrested for DUI.
Ward was processed and then released to his spouse, but later returned to the police station at 1:33 a.m. to speak with officers about his personal property.
A preliminary investigation indicates that an officer initially spoke with Ward outside, then requested another officer for backup.
A handgun registered to Ward was recovered at the scene.
The Lancaster County Detectives were called to the scene and will continue to investigate. Ultimately, District Attorney Heather Adams will make a determination on the justification of the shooting when the investigation is complete.
