HARRISBURG, Pa. — Update, 1:45 p.m. (June 10): The Dauphin County Coroner's Office has identified the deceased as Kendrell Hall, 22, of Harrisburg. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
Previously: Officials in Harrisburg are investigating an officer-involved shooting that took the life of one person early Sunday morning.
According to the City of Harrisburg's director of communications, Matt Maisel, a Harrisburg Police officer and Capitol K9 Officer (with dog) were chasing after a man on foot from downtown around 1:30 a.m.
Around the 200 block of South Street, the 22-year-old man reportedly fired multiple shots at the officers.
Maisel stated that officers returned fire and struck and killed the person who fired upon them.
In a press release, officials stated that it's unknown why the man was running in the first place. Neither the Harrisburg or Capitol Police were hurt.
According to Maisel, the K9 was spooked by the gunfire and ran away, but was located shortly after. The K9 also took a graze wound from one of the shots but is reportedly doing fine.
Due to the fact that the shooting is officer-involved, the Dauphin County Criminal Investigative Division will run the investigation moving forward.
