Police: Man admits to sexually abusing child in Lancaster County

NEW HOLLAND, Pa. — A Huntingdon man is facing charges after he allegedly admitted to sexually assaulting a child multiple times.

Police began investigating Richard Sherman, 45, when they received a Childline Referral initiated from a text the victim sent her friend saying that Sherman had raped her.

The victim allegedly told police during a forensic interview that Sherman had touched her sexually. Officers say they also reviewed some of the victim's writings in her journal in which she wrote about the assaults and said Sherman had threatened to hurt her mother if the victim told anyone about the abuse.

Police interviewed Sherman on Dec. 14, and he allegedly admitted to touching the victim inappropriately and making her touch him as well. Officers say Sherman claimed each incident occurred at a home in New Holland, Lancaster County.

Police say the abuse occurred when the child was between 4 and 10 years old.

The New Holland Police Department charged Sherman with rape of child, incest of minor - complainant under 13 years, two counts of aggravated indecent assault - complainant less than 13 years old, two counts of indecent assault person less than 13 years of age, corruption of minors - defendant age 18 or above, unlawful contact with minor - sexual offenses and indecent exposure.
