LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. — A Lancaster County man has been placed under arrest allegedly stabbing a State Trooper, Pennsylvania State Police said.
Troopers say the incident occurred around 6:16 p.m. on Aug. 31 when a law enforcement officer was driving through the 500 block of Union Street in Columbia Borough and noticed a man who entered the roadway "acting erratically."
The trooper stopped to investigate the man, identified as Michael Smith, and called for backup. Smith went into his home while still acting erratically, according to State Police.
Officers attempted to arrest Smith pending a 302 commitment—an involuntary commitment to a mental health facility—for his own safety and the safety of residents in the home, troopers said. During the attempt to take him into custody, Smith allegedly stabbed a trooper in the hand.
The trooper was treated at a local hospital and released.
Smith was taken to Lancaster County Prison, where he was arraigned and released on $10,000 unsecured bail. He is charged with multiple counts of aggravated assault against law enforcement, State Police said.
Troopers say there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
