HARRISBURG, Pa. — A York man was sentenced to 13 months in prison for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, the United States Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced on Thursday.
Tanner Uffelman, 29, of York, was charged with submitting multiple false applications to states seeking unemployment compensation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, United States Attorney Gerard M. Karam stated.
From 2020 to 2021, Uffelman submitted false claims using the identifications of victims in Massachusetts, Maryland, North Carolina and California. When pleading guilty to the crime in January 2024, Uffelman admitted that the fraud scheme stole over $40,000.
As Uffelman was committing this federal offense, he was under supervision by York County authorities for unlawful contact or communication with a minor and corruption of minors from a 2018 conviction where he, 23 years old at the time, reportedly had a corrupt relationship with a 14-year-old girl.
Judge Jennifer Wilson deemed the 13 months Uffelman spent in Dauphin County Prison sufficient punishment for the federal crime he committed and issued a time-served sentence.
