HERSHEY, Pa. — The Hershey Story Museum is offering a reimagined homeschooling session for families in the Central Pennsylvania area.
Participants will examine maps, photographs and artifacts that show how the town of Hershey changed over the years to become "The Sweetest Place on Earth.”
The program for homeschooling families allows them to explore and learn together at the museum, according to Elizabeth Lindsay, manager of education and public programming at the Hershey Story Museum.
The theme for the homeschooling session, "A Community Built on Chocolate," is geared towards students in the second through eighth grades, but organizers say students in all grades are welcome.
“If you look at Milton, he was not only this great man in making chocolate, but he was also all about the people,” said Lindsay.
Hands-on activities include creating a paper "city" and constructing a building using architectural elements that focus on the importance of community development. Each participant will design and make their own "chocolate town" using milk chocolate, pretzels and marshmallows to take home and enjoy.
“If we’re talking about a community built on chocolate, of course we have to build a community out of chocolate,” said Lindsay.
Families will also gain access to the Hershey Story Museum and participate in an educational scavenger hunt through museum exhibits. Including the homeschooling session and scavenger hunt, the program is expected to last two hours.
Families can register for Tuesdays, March 12, 19 and 26. Participants can pick between a 9:30 a.m. session or an 11:30 a.m. session.
Tickets are $17 per person for ages 3 and up. Admission is free for ages 2 and under. Tickets can be purchased online until the day before the requested session. Organizers say seating is limited, and the sessions tend to sell out early.
