Shippensburg University will offer free period products to students beginning in fall semester

The initiative is part of the university's ongoing efforts to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for the Raider community, the school said.

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — A Central Pennsylvania university announced it will offer free period products to students, staff and visitors beginning in the fall semester.

Shippensburg University said in a press release that period products will be available in all women's and gender-neutral restrooms as part of the school's "ongoing efforts to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for the Raider community."

The need for these products can be unexpected and cause individuals to miss class, meetings, or other activities, the university said.

By providing these products, Ship "will eliminate this barrier for members of the community," the university continued.

Moreover, the school said, period poverty -- the lack of access to menstrual products due to financial constraints -- "is a significant issue that affects many individuals, including members of the campus community."

By providing these essential products, the university said it aims to reduce the challenges that period poverty can create, ensuring everyone has the resources they need to fully participate in academic and campus life.

“Everyone within our community deserves an equal path to success, and with this new program, we remove a barrier that impacts many individuals," said Lorie Sheetz, vice president for Student Affairs and dean of students at Shippensburg University. "We are committed to seeking effective ways to support students and the free period product program is a great example of this work."

Students in need of additional period products can also visit Big Red's Cupboard, which provides free food and personal hygiene items for students in need.
