More than 100 rainbow trout released in creek by students at The Janus School

Students at the Janus School learned how to raise and release trout from the Trout in the Classroom program.

MOUNT JOY, Pa. — Students at The Janus School released more than 100 rainbow trout into the Little Chiques Creek in Mount Joy on Monday.

They raised the fish for four months as part of the Trout in the Classroom program by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.

Back in January, The Janus School, a private school for students with learning differences, received 273 rainbow trout eggs. Five seniors and three other Upper Division students cared for the fish. They completed four different water quality tests daily, fed the fish and monitored the water going into the tank.

During Earth Day week, other students tested the water quality of Little Chiques Creek to check the environment the trout would be released into.

The Trout in the Classroom program provides students with a hands-on learning experience that teaches them about the environment, the importance of conservation and how to care for a species, the Janus School said.

On Monday, all of the students at The Janus School officially released the rainbow trout into the Little Chiques Creek.
