Here's a look at the top three health headlines from the week to keep you Health Smart.

Adults tend to have trouble sleeping

According to the CDC, more than 17% of adults say they have trouble staying asleep most nights. 

Reasons include stress, anxiety, discomfort, pain, environment temperature and disorders. So if you're having trouble counting sheep and you can't fall asleep, here are some tips to remember.  

Techniques like progressive relaxation, breathing exercises and white noise machines could help. If you don't fall asleep after 15 minutes, get out of  bed and try something like reading for a little. Experts also suggest trying melatonin supplements and adjusting your caffeine intake. 

Major medical breakthrough

There has been a major medical breakthrough to treat sickle cell disease.  

The Food and Drug Administration approved the first-ever gene editing therapy for humans that could cure the painful, inherited blood disorder. Doctors will now be able to to snip a patient's DNA, blocking the debilitating effects of the blood disorder that affects 100,000 people in the United States, most of them Black.  

The FDA also approved a second treatment for patients using conventional gene therapy that adds good hemoglobin to the patients' DNA.

Study: Pickleball helps elderly people's mental health 

Pickleball might be the best medicine for the elderly. 

New research suggests that the popular sport can be beneficial for their mental health. The survey by North Carolina-based support caregivers company "Carewell" polled 1,000 Americans about the impact pickleball has had on their psyche and found that nearly 70% of older adults reported reduced stress and anxiety after playing the sport.  

Half of them said they value the sense of community that comes with pickleball, and many experienced enhanced cognition and increased self-esteem.
