YORK, Pa. —

FDA approves vaccine for Chikungunya virus

The FDA has approved the first vaccine to combat the Chikungunya virus.

Health officials are calling the virus--which is spread by infected mosquitoes--an "emerging global health threat." The vaccine has been approved for people at least 18 years old.

Doctors say infection can lead to serious illness and long-term health problems, especially for older adults and those with underlying health issues. At least 5 million cases have been reported over the past 15 years.

Life expectancy gap between men and women growing

A research paper published in Jama Internal Medicine shows the life expectancy gap between men and women in America is widening.

In fact, according to new research from Harvard Health, the gap has been widening for more than a decade. Men now live--on average--six years less than women. The trend is said to be driven by the opioid epidemic, the COVID-19 pandemic and other factors, such as accidents and suicides.

This comes as life expectancy in the United States dropped to 76.1 years in 2021 from 77 years in 2020.

Apple sauce pouches linked to lead poisoning

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say at least 22 children between the ages of 1 and 3 were sickened by lead linked to apple sauce and cinnamon apple puree pouches in 14 states.

The CDC says the outbreak is linked to recalled products from the brands Wanabana, Schnucks and Weis. Symptoms linked to lead poisoning include headache, nausea and vomiting.

The agency says children who have eaten any of those fruit puree products should be tested for possible lead poisoning.
