HARRISBURG, Pa. — Penn State Heath has agreed to pay more than $11.7 million to resolve allegations of civil liability for violating Medicare billing rules and regulations, U.S. Attorney Gerard M. Karam said Wednesday.
The multi-hospital health system voluntarily disclosed that between December 2015 and November 2022, Penn State Health submitted claims to Medicare for Annual Wellness Visit services that were not supported by the medical record, Karam said.
After PSH discovered the problems, it took prompt corrective action and disclosed the matter to the U.S. Attorney's Office, according to Karam.
The payments resolve PSH of civil liability, Karam said.
This matter was handled by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Office of Counsel to the Inspector General (OCIG), and Assistant U.S. Attorney Tamara Haken of the Affirmative Civil Enforcement Unit of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.
