What happened in health news this week? | Health Smart

Here is a look at the top health headlines from the week.

YORK, Pa. —

Free COVID-19 tests available next month

Beginning this month, the United States Health and Human Services Department says COVID-19 test kits will be available to order online for free once again.

They say this year's kits will detect certain strains of the virus and will be available ahead of the holidays. They can be ordered online at COVIDTests.gov.

An updated COVID-19 vaccine has also been approved by federal regulators. The CDC recommends all Americans 6 months and older to get a new COVID shot.

Gambling a major problem among 18-39

A new poll found that 10% of young men in the United States ages 18 to 39 show behavior indicating a gambling problem.

Respondents were asked several questions, including if they borrowed money to gamble or if gambling causes financial or emotional issues. Twenty-four percent of men reported at least one problem behavior, and that percentage went up to 45% for men 30 and under.

Results also show those problems are closely related to online sports betting and online slot machines.

Severe obesity rates surging

Almost half of the county's adults are considered obese, according to the latest findings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

A new study showed about 4 in 10 adults are obese. The obesity rate is at about 40%, and while that's down from 42% between 2017 and 2020, experts say the overall obesity rate hasn't dramatically declined over the last decade.

Several new weight loss drugs are growing in availability, but officials say they haven't been around long enough to show an impact in obesity rates nationwide.
