Harrisburg Bicycle Club's 9/11 Remembrance Ride pays tribute to lives lost

The Harrisburg Bicycle Club is hosting a 9/11 Remembrance Ride this morning to honor those who lost their lives 23 years ago.

DAUPHIN COUNTY, Pa. — Never forget.

Today, we pause to remember all of the lives lost 23 years ago in the 9/11 terror attacks in New York City, Washington DC, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

As part of a powerful tribute, the Harrisburg Bicycle Club is leading a Remembrance Ride through the city that ends at the 9/11 memorial at Harrisburg Area Community College.

Cyclists will gather near the barns at Fort Hunter at 8:30 a.m. this morning and leave at 9 a.m. to take part in the 20-mile ride around Harrisburg.

Riders will be making a couple of stops along the way to different landmarks throughout the city, including the Firefighter’s Memorial.

Diane Dankman-Riley, a certified ride leader for Harrisburg Bicycle Club, says this event is meant to remind people to take a moment of silence during their busy day and remember those who lost their lives.

“I remember hearing it on the radio, and life stopped," Dankman-Riley said. “I just think that it is important that my generation, who remembers exactly where we were 23 years ago, pass this down and continue to do this in our schools with our children, with our grandchildren and great grandchildren.”

Although this event is organized by the Harrisburg Bicycle Club, everyone is welcome to join the ride.

Cyclists must bring a helmet and are encouraged to wear red, white and blue and bring an American flag. This is not expected to be a fast ride.

Riders will end their journey at the 9/11 Memorial outside Harrisburg Area Community College, where a steel beam that was taken from the rubble after the attacks sits. They will then place their American flags around the memorial.
