ADAMS COUNTY, Pa. — Editor's note: The above video is from June 17.
The Adams County SPCA is thanking the community after a hard month.
Four weeks ago, it rescued nearly 40 abused animals from a filthy trailer. Now, every pet is ready for adoption.
The SPCA says all of the birds have been blood tested and tagged by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.
"We can't express how relieved we are that all of the birds are healthy and have met the state health requirements," the SPCA said on Facebook. "Now they are ready to fly the coop!!"
The organization did note that it has homes for most of the birds already.
The SPCA called the last four weeks a "nightmare." Some of the animals rescued didn't make it, having to be euthanized due to their aggression or extent of their injuries. The SPCA also had to close for a period of time after taking the animals in due to the level of care they required and an outbreak of scabies.
The animals were rescued from a trailer attached to a bus on June 16 after officers arrested driver Shawn Hirschbine on outstanding warrants out of West Virginia.
SPCA workers removed 30 chickens, roosters, ducks and turkeys, three German Shepherds, one Australian Shepherd, one bull and one pony from the trailer. Officials say the dogs were being fed the chickens and the bull and pony may have been used for bestiality purposes in another state.
The SPCA said in June that it is still waiting on DNA test results to determine if there is human DNA that would indicate bestiality inside any of the animals, but the results will take months to receive.
