ORRTANNA, Pa. — The Adams County SPCA received a donation of $4,000 raised through a contest organized by the Adams County Winery.
Rusty's Sidekick Contest, which was held for the first time since the winery's beloved golden retriever, Rusty, died in 2017, gave participants a chance to nominate their pet to be featured on the label of the winery's "Rusty Sidekick Red."
Participants were then allowed to vote for their favorites, the winery said.
In addition to donating entry fees and voting fees from the contest, which saw more than 100 canines entered this year, Adams County Winery donated a portion of the sales from each bottle of “Rusty’s Sidekick Red," which features the winner of this year's contest, a cocker spaniel named Rocky, on the label.
“The overwhelming response we have received for the Rusty’s Sidekick Contest last year exceeded our expectations and our fundraising goal," said Dan Baumgardner, general manager of Adams County Winery. "We are grateful that our guests share the same passion for the valuable work the Adams County SPCA does in our community as we do, which was proven by the participation in the contest."
The winery’s donation directly supports the Adams County SPCA’s mission of “providing shelter and caring for lost, abandoned and abused animals, investigating cases of cruelty to animals, recommending the prosecution of persons engaging in animal neglect or cruelty, helping control animal overpopulation and educating the community about spay/neuter programs, animal wellness, and safety.”
Adams County Winery opened its doors in 1975 in Orrtanna, and is currently Pennsylvania’s fifth-oldest operating winery, as well as the Gettysburg area’s original winery. The Farm Winery location sits on more than 75 acres of rolling hills and farmland while operating out of an 1860s registered historic PA bank barn.
