GETTYSBURG, Pa. — The Borough of Gettysburg issued a warning Friday to visitors and residents about a suspect scam involving phony QR codes placed on the borough's parking meters.

Scanning the codes takes victims to a fake website that mimics the borough's pay-by-phone mobile park service, the borough said. Payments made through this phony QR code do not begin a parking session in the borough.

The borough said it does not use any QR codes for parking payments and urges residents and visitors not to scan any QR codes found on the borough's meters.

"If you notice someone placing stickers on the meters who is not wearing an official parking officer uniform, please contact the local police department immediately," the borough said. "The non-emergency police phone number is (717) 334-8101."
