Littlestown Community Pool is closing after 60 years of operation

The borough said the cost of replacing the pool would be more than $2 million, and with low attendance and staffing issues, it "does not make sense" to keep it open.

LITTLESTOWN, Pa. — A community pool in Adams County is closing this year after more than 60 summers of operation.

In an announcement posted on Facebook Thursday, Littlestown borough manager Charles G. Kellar said the borough council voted in December to close the 60-year-old swimming pool, which needed to be replaced after more than six dozen years of operation.

The cost of replacing the pool would be approximately $2 million, Kellar said.

With the high cost of replacing the pool, new state regulations regarding staffing requirements and training, and declining attendance in recent years, "it does not make sense" to continue operating the pool, Kellar said.

Instead, Kellar said, the borough will embark on a new project to upgrade Littlestown Community Park in the spring. As part of that planned improvement, the council will look at alternatives to the swimming pool, which could include the installation of a splash park, Kellar said.

"During the survey period for the community park upgrade, a lot of residents indicated they would prefer that type of facility versus a standard pool," Kellar said.

The borough will continue to update residents regarding park improvements, according to Kellar.
