Farmer loses hay, equipment in Lancaster County fire

The affected farmer expressed his gratitude for members of the community who have stepped up to support him.

LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. — A Lancaster County farmer is taking stock of what is left after a fire early Tuesday morning destroyed all of his hay and damaged some equipment.

Firefighters responded to the scene at a hay barn on the 1500 block of Lime Valley Road in Strasburg Township around 5:30 a.m. on Sept. 17, according to Lancaster County 911 Dispatch.

The fire reached two alarms before it was brought under control; crews are currently putting out hotspots. The barn collapsed, and firefighters had to separate the metal roof from the hay in order to douse the burning hay.

The hay will be moved to a field to burn itself the rest of the way out away from any structures.

No one was injured in the blaze, and the coroner was not called, according to Dispatch.

The blaze ignited in a hay barn right next to a barn housing cows, but no animals were injured either.

The farmer who owns this piece of land says he's not sure how the fire started, as he was monitoring moisture levels in the hay and they appeared to be in a safe range.

One of the damaged pieces of equipment was supposed to go to the Lampeter Fair next week.

The farmer expressed his gratitude for members of the community who have stepped up to support him.
