HARRISBURG, Pa. — Note: The video is from April 10.
The City of Harrisburg and the Broad Street Market Alliance on Wednesday announced that construction and final inspections for a new tent structure across from the Market's Stone Building are nearly complete, and a "soft launch" of the new structure has been scheduled for later this month.
The Alliance said it will soon receive the keys to the structure from the city, and its first public opening is scheduled for Thursday, May 23.
Nine vendors will operate out of the new structure, according to the Alliance.
They are:
- Cherished Treasures
- Diaspora
- Doggie Delights
- Fisher’s Delights
- Lil’s Pretzels
- Peach Ridge Produce
- rijuice
- Taylor Chip
- Two Brothers BBQ
“Following last year’s tragic fire, the Broad Street Market’s customers, vendors, and supporters have understandably been waiting a long time for this day," said Market chairman Eric Hagarty. "But Harrisburg is a resilient town and the community has stepped up to finally make this day a reality.
“When the public has the chance to see the new space on May 23, we think it will be apparent that despite the exterior, it is so much more than a tent -- it’s a wonderful, vibrant place to get the produce, meats, and treats we’ve been missing for months. And it’s the first step on the Market’s road to lasting recovery.”
The Alliance said completion of the project would not have been possible without support and generous contributions from:
- Harrisburg Mayor Wanda Williams’s administration, which managed the construction effort, and Governor Josh Shapiro’s administration for their support throughout the construction;
- The McClure Company, which installed plumbing at no cost to the City;
- Touch of Color Flooring, which donated commercial-grade vinyl flooring;
- Midtown Property Management, which is providing facilities and leasing support to the Market for free;
- Members of the Carpenters Local 431 and the Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters, who performed carpentry work inside the structure for free; and,
- KCS Electric, which installed electricity in the building.
The Broad Street Market, founded in 1860, is the oldest continuously-operated market house in the United States. It serves as the long-time anchor of retail activity in Harrisburg’s Midtown business corridor, with dozens of vendors providing locally-grown and organic produce, meats, baked goods, freshly-prepared meals, and more.
Despite the fire that burned down the Brick Building last year, the Stone Building remains open for business Thursdays and Fridays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
