Bugs take over Hershey Gardens

Unique insects from around the world will crawl to Hershey Gardens for Bug-O-Rama on Sunday.

HERSHEY, Pa. — All kinds of insects from around the world will swarm Hershey Gardens this weekend for Bug-O-Rama.

The family-friendly event educates both kids and adults about the bug, arachnid and reptile world and the vital role they play in our ecosystem in a fun, interactive way meant to help make people feel more comfortable around the creatures.

"It's gonna be bugs like this from all over the world," Jody Santos, manager of conservatory habitats at Hershey Gardens, said. "Interesting, fun, you can ask people questions, get answers to your questions. If you're a little afraid, you can learn, which is going to help you be less afraid."

Tarantulas, unique mantises, scorpions, jungle nymphs, cockroaches, walking sticks and more from around the world will be represented at the event. Ryan "The Bug Man" Bridge will have a collection of live and preserved insects and arachnids, and the Pennsylvania Bat Rescue will also bring live bats to the event.

Fort Indiantown Gap and ZooAmerica will discuss their efforts to save the last remaining population of Eastern Regal Fritillary Butterfly. Keys to Bees and Penn State Entomological Outreach will also have representatives at the event.

For those who prefer not to get up close and personal with the bugs, organizers will also have hands-on activities and crafts available.

Admission to Bug-O-Rama is included with the purchase of a regular general admission ticket to Hershey Gardens. Tickets can be purchased online in advance or at the front desk upon arrival. The event will take place on Sunday, Sept. 8 from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
