A 3-year-old boy died in a backyard pool in Lancaster County Sunday afternoon, police said Monday.
According to East Hempfield Township Police, emergency personnel were dispatched to a home on Wheatland Avenue at about 12:08 p.m. for the report of a child in cardiac arrest.
Arriving officers said the boy had been removed from the pool after being found unresponsive, and lifesaving measures were attempted before emergency personnel arrived.
EMS personnel continued life-saving measures and the boy was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An investigation determined the child walked from his home on Wheatland Avenue without his family's knowledge and made his way to a neighbor's home, where the pool was located.
The incident remains under investigation by police, and an autopsy has been scheduled by the Lancaster County Coroner's Office, which will determine the cause and manner of death, police said.
"The East Hempfield Twp. Police Department extends our heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of the child who lost his life," the police department said.
