Clear weather helps outdoor dining return throughout downtown York

York businesses took advantage of Friday’s clear weather and offered outdoor dining for the first time in quite a while.

YORK, Pa. — First Friday in York returned for another month and with it came the opportunity to enjoy outdoor dining.

“Always grateful to have good weather, be able to go outside, drink and eat,” said Kameron Kirk, a York resident.

On Friday, Kirk met with friends at Gift Horse Brewing Company to enjoy the good weather and live music.

Tyler Bobitz also took advantage of the day by joining friends outside.

“It’s always good to be outside, a lot easier to have fun with friends, play games, and enjoy drinks outside so definitely I think it provokes me to want to go outside more, enjoy that weather and enjoy a good time with friends,” Bobitz said.

For Mickey Knaper, the owner of Gift Horse Brewing Company, good weather means utilizing 6,000 square feet of outdoor dining space.

“Mother Nature was not being very kind to us through most of April and the beginning of May, and now the last two weeks we’ve had the street closed, but the first two weeks of street closures they had to cancel it because of the rain,” Knaper said.

Roughly 30% of Knaper’s revenue comes from outdoor seating and says it can be essential for a business’s bottom line.

“They’re the difference between making it and not making it to tell you the truth.”

It isn’t the only business on the block to offer outdoor seating.

People can visit The Handsome Cab and Rockfish Public House, just to name a few.

You may even see something colorful like a parrot at a pizza shop.

“Whether it’s at Gift Horse, whether it’s at White Rose, other restaurants, we’ll definitely be checking it out,” Bobitz said.
