NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY, Pa. — Here on what is State Route 4005 is where two Snydertown residents, out walking on a warm summer day in July of 1983, found the body of an unidentified newborn baby girl. Pennsylvania State Police consider the infant's death a homicide.
"The baby was unfortunately found in some plastic bags and a Jamesway bag wrapped up. After an autopsy, it showed that the baby was just hours old," said Trooper Brian Watkins, PSP Criminal Investigation Assessment Unit.
Authorities have spent decades trying to identify the baby girl in Northumberland County and solve the case.
"And that's obviously our focus here, is giving the girl a name. She does not deserve not to have answers; she doesn't deserve to have an unmarked grave, so that's been our goal and focus, and we've been doing continued interviews and DNA analysis on trying to identify her," said Trooper Watkins.
Now, PSP in Milton is asking for help from anyone who might know exactly what happened to the baby girl more than 41 years ago.
"And also, we issued a tip. A tip line that individuals can call in with a reward of $2,000, so at this point, we know somebody has information, and we just encourage them to do the right thing and come forward and help us out," said Trooper Watkins.
Investigators say they have already received some tips.
"We've already gotten some calls about different things, so we just hope that the individual out there with information or individuals comes forward and helps us," said Trooper Watkins.
