GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- On Friday, the 153rd annual Gettysburg Reenactment kicks off at the Gettysburg Movie Site.

The first event begins at 8:30 on Friday morning and runs through Sunday afternoon.

Organizers say this year roughly 1000 reenactors are signed up and the event is expected to bring nearly 50,000 people to the area over the holiday weekend.

This year the reenactment is unique because it falls on the exact dates of the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863.

"Today is also July 1st which is 153 years ago  today the battle began so that is the real significance of this particular event," explained Kirk Davis. "We had a lot of people who signed up this year because it is a true anniversary event."
