GETTYSBURG, Pa. -Straban Township supervisors and a developer have created a proposal to extend part of Camp Letterman Drive. Extending the drive would give more access to land and therefore big businesses could build in the area.
"This is, without a question, the greatest threat to the battlefield and to the hallow ground, that has risen in Gettysburg for many years," said Barbara Mowery, president of the Gettysburg Battlefield Preservation Society.
Barbara Mowery and other members of the Gettysburg Battlefield Preservation Society want to stop any development before it starts. No definitive decisions have been made.
At one time the property was considered historic. Then, in the nineties the Secretary of Interiors changed the boundary lines. The property is privately owned.
Straban Township supervisors have not commented on the situation.
