Could your home be  making you sick? Concerns over a chemical found in furniture and flooring have put the public on alert over formaldehyde.

Due to its preserving properties, formaldehyde is most known as embalming fluid.

But people across the country have reported the chemical made them sick.

Micah Ohlman from our sister station KTLA, spoke to one man who said formaldehyde caused a serious decline in his health.

And where he uncovered the cancer-causing agent was in a spot many of us wouldn't consider.

Steven Chiamori works from home taking care of his 97-year-old mother.  He started getting sick, but had no idea where the headaches and nausea were coming from.

He had recently replaced the flooring in his home after water damage, so when he saw a report on formaldehyde in flooring he thought it might be the culprit.

Steven called in an inspector to check the floors, but the hardwood wasn't the hazard.

A laundry cabinet recently installed next to his dryer was putting out levels of formaldehyde above the acceptable limit. And when the dryer was heating up, the formaldehyde become more volatile.

Steven removed the cabinet, and he said within days he started feeling better.

Earlier this year federal investigators announced they would look into the laminate flooring being sold by Lumber Liquidators.

Right now, there are more than one hundred class action lawsuits pending against the company over concerns of toxic amounts of formaldehyde in flooring.
