PENN TOWNSHIP, YORK COUNTY, Pa — Fire officials say at least one person is injured following a house explosion and fire this afternoon in York County.
It happened just after 2:00 P.M. Saturday on the 600 block of Baltimore Street in Penn Township. Crews say the explosion came from the north side of the 4-unit apartment building. They say two people were inside the building at the time of the incident. One of them was severely burned and was airlifted to Johns Hopkins Bayview Burn Unit in Maryland. The second person who was on the first floor at the time, escaped without injury.
Columbia Gas also responded. They dug up a gas service line at the end of the street and shut it off due to meters being possibly damaged during the explosion. Columbia Gas determined it was not at fault for the explosion, meanwhile all water, gas, and electric is off as authorities investigate.
The fire marshall says crews are now working on determining if its safe for them to go in and get aerial footage. As of now, it’s unclear what caused the explosion. A detour has been set up in the area for people traveling near Baltimore Street and Wirt Avenue.
The Red Cross is assisting eight people who were displaced following the incident.
