EAST PENNSBORO TOWNSHIP, CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Pa.-- The pool has been at the school for decades. Mary Karoly has children in the East Pennsboro School District.
"If it closes, what will happen to my child but to many other families," Mary Karoly East Pennsboro resident said.
She started to go to the school board meetings around 2 years ago about the pool closure.
"We're being told that the pool costs so much to run that the district, and the taxpayer will benefit from closure of this pool," Karoly said.
"It's not the fact that we want to close the pool," East Pennsboro School District Assistant Superintendent Greg Milbrand said.
He said the school spends about $110 thousand dollars a year on the pool, which is estimated to need $600 thousand in repairs.
"The budget impact of the past few years has taken a tool on our maintenance budget as well," Milbrand.
Residents are asking, if the pool is closed what becomes of it. Karoly says she's been asking that question for about a year.
"I have filed about 5 right to knows over that time period," Karoly said.
"As a school district right now, we are undergoing a feasibility study," Milbrand said. "Studying all five of our buildings to see what renovations might need done. Par of those discussions are what educational space will come should they decide to close the pool."
Other residents say cutting swimming would be detrimental for children in the school district.
"This could be the only opportunity they have to learn a life skill," East Pennsboro resident Ken Turner.
The school board is expected to vote on the matter on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
