DUNCANNON, Pa.– A central Pennsylvania landmark, the Doyle Hotel in Duncannon, is in danger of closing in the next two weeks if certain financial obligations are not met.
The hotel is located at the Appalachian Trail in Duncannon at 7 North Main Street and is used by both the local population and approximately 1200 trail hikers per year.
It opened in the 1770s as a three-story, wooden hotel that served as a main stopping point along the Susquehanna River. That original wooden building was burnt to the ground in 1903, and was replaced by the brick structure that stands today.
It became “The Doyle” after Jim Doyle bought the building in 1944 and operated the hotel until the 1990s. After passing through various owners for a few years, it was bought by Pat and Vickey Kelly in 2001. The Kellys have owned and operated the hotel ever since.
“With no hikers on the trail during the winter season, the timing of the tax deadlines and mortgage deadlines just hits at the wrong time of year,” said Pat Kelly.
A Go Fund Me account has been set up to help the Doyle through this tough period. Almost $2000 has been raised of the $9000 that is needed.
