WILKES-BARRE -- According to WNEP, a correction's officer and inmate died after an altercation Monday at Luzerne County Prison. There are still many unanswered questions.

The two were killed Monday night.  All the Luzerne County manager will say right now is the corrections officer and inmate died after a brief fight around 6:30 p.m. at the jail.

The name of the corrections officer has not been released, but we do know the identity of the dead inmate. Timothy Gilliam, 27, listed as homeless and at the jail because he didn't register as a sex offender under Megan's Law.

County manager David Pedri would not comment on published and social media reports the two died after falling five floors down an elevator shaft.

"I want to assure the public," began Pedri, "that there is no threat to public safety at this time. This was an isolated internal incident, and that the Luzerne County Correctional Facility is currently on lock down."

Lock down means inmate movement is severely restricted. State police, the district attorney's office and prison officials are all conducting the investigation. Reports will be provided by the state.

While the prison warden is a veteran at the facility, yesterday was his first day at the job.

The county manager adds grief counselors will be made available to prison staff and inmates.
