MOUNT JOY, Pa. -- Young members of the military spent Veterans Day giving back in Lancaster County.
78 Midshipmen from the Naval Academy packed boxes of food, as well as clothing and blankets for Global Aid network. They packed 150 boxes of rice and beans, with 144 meals inside each one- totaling more than 10,000 meals. The boxes will go to refugee camps around the world.
First-year midshipman Diane Muhizi is a refugee herself. Her family fled the genocide in Rwanda when she was a child, and she grew up in a camp before coming to the United States.
"The people receiving the clothes, the food, I was those people like 6 years ago so, I'm really, there's no word to describe what I'm feeling right now," she says. "I just cannot fathom this whole transformation that's happened in my life."
The midshipmen ended up competing with each other to see who could pack the most boxes. They were led by a veteran who has delivered aid around the world himself.
"The United States is so good about helping people in need around the world, and this is just kind of an extension," says Ret. Col. Phil Liller of the GAIN Logistics center. "And these young midshipmen from the Naval Academy, their hearts are in the right place."
