YORK COUNTY -- Two people died and another person was rushed to the hospital Wednesday night after a two-vehicle crash in Newberry Township, according to police.
The deadly accident occurred in the 100 block of Yocumtown Road.
On Thursday morning, the York County Coroner's Office identified the victims killed in the crash as Elijah Lehman, 17, of New Cumberland, and Matthew Stahl, 21, of Etters.
Lehman died at York Hospital; Stahl died at the scene.
Police say the incident occurred at about 7:19 p.m. on the 100 block of Yocumtown Road. The crash involved a 2010 Ford Edge driven by Lehman and a 2018 Lexus sedan driven by Stahl. Police say Lehman was driving at a high rate of speed, traveling east on Yocumtown Road, when it entered the westbound lane and struck Stahl's vehicle head-on.
Lehman's vehicle caught fire immediately after the impact, police say. He was pulled from the vehicle by a bystander, who tried to render aid before he was transported to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Stahl's passenger, a 21-year-old Etters woman, was assisted from the vehicle by a bystander and transported to a local hospital, where she is listed in stable condition.
The road was closed for several hours while police investigated the crash.
"It's a sad day. Two young lives perished in an accident, and I wish we could turn back time and get them back with us. All I would say is people in the public, be careful, be cautious, watch your speed," said Chief Steve Lutz of Newberry Township Police Department.
Chief Lutz also wants people to be cautious of deer and other animals crossing roadways; he says this is one of the most dangerous times for drivers.
