LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. – Susan Martin has resigned not only as Lancaster County SPCA’s executive director but also as president of the non-profit’s board of directors. Her last day on the board of directors was effective Monday, October 24, and her last day running the shelter will be Friday, November 4.

Martin’s resignation was announced in a release by the LCSPCA board early Monday afternoon.

According to the release Martin told LCSPCA’s board of directors that she could no longer endure the emotional challenge of seeing abused animals come through the doors without having the actual or persuasive authority to find justice for them.

The board expressed its grateful for Martin’s dedicated service to the county and its homeless animals. She founded the open-admission shelter in February 2013 and has helped over 20,000 animals since then.

Caught off guard by Martin’s surprise resignation, the board of directors says it is committed to continuing the mission of the shelter and is already making plans for its continued success and service to the community.

LCSPCA’s board of directors is in the process of electing a new board president and is finalizing plans for hiring an interim executive director, who will oversee shelter and Lancaster County Thrift Store operations until a new, permanent executive director can be named.
