MANHEIM TWP., Lancaster County, Pa. — When the cook at a popular diner suffered a heart attack, State Police Troopers who happened to be at the diner, sprang into action.
Before 5 am on Monday, May 30, Luis Flores suffered a heart attack and collapsed onto the floor of the Lyndon Diner on Manheim Pike in Lancaster. Troopers First Class James Fassnacht, Dawn Carpenter, James Trunfio, and Stefanie Schianvoni performed CPR on Flores until an AED – a portable automated external defibrillator – was retrieved from the patrol vehicle parked in the parking lot.
The AED was utilized, and it applied three separate shocks to Flores. Susquehanna Valley EMS Captain Adam Marden arrived on scene and administered one additional shock to Flores. Flores was then transported to Lancaster General Hospital for treatment.
If it wasn’t for the quick actions by these troopers and the availability of the AED on scene at the time of the heart attack, Flores would not be alive today. He was hospitalized for several days and is now doing well.
Major Dante Orlandi of Pennsylvania State Police, Captain Maurice Tomlinson of Troop J Lancaster, the American Heart Association, and Susquehanna Valley EMS Captain Marden presented certificates of appreciation to all involved Tuesday, August 30 at Pennsylvania State Police in Lancaster.
