FRANKLIN COUNTY, Pa. – Pennsylvania State Police – Chambersburg say an unknown medical emergency apparently caused a crash that killed a Virginia man and child on Interstate 81 at mile post 20 in Franklin County.  Police say Calvin Mourice Edmonds, 44, of Roanoke, was driving northbound in an Ford Edge SUV when he slumped unconscious over the steering wheel.

The SUV traveled across the grassy median into the southbound lanes. A female passenger in the front seat grabbed the wheel and attempted to gain control of the SUV but was unsuccessful. The SUV continued onto the southbound lanes where it was struck nearly headon by a Freightliner tractor trailer.

Edmonds and a 12 year old boy passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. An 11 month old infant suffered critical injuries. The 42 year old female suffered moderate injuries. The tractor trailer driver escaped injury.

The southbound lanes of I-81 in Greene Township were closed for over five while accident reconstruction teams investigated.
