NEW CUMBERLAND, Pa. — Volunteers loaded dozens of boxes into cars, as they extended a helping hand to people in need.
On Tuesday, DeSouza Brown, a Harrisburg-based property management company, and Vicki’s Angels Foundation came together for their Thanksgiving in a Box giveaway.
All of the donated meals are going to families who are fighting cancer.
“We want to fill their hearts this season with hope," said Grace Ford, the executive director for Vickie's Angels Foundation. “We want to make sure that they don’t have to worry about food expenses, so that they can concentrate on healing.”
Organizers gave Thanksgiving boxes to 28 families living throughout Central Pa.. Each box has enough food to feed six to eight people.
Sarah Thomas is one of the people bringing home a box this Thanksgiving. She said the donation gives her one less thing to worry about, allowing her and her family to properly celebrate the holiday.
“Anything is a blessing at this time of year and during this time," said Thomas, who lives in Susquehanna Township. “We probably would have done a breast and some stuffing, something very lowkey. But to have it actually prepared [takes] a load off.”
Dozens of families get to have a hot Thanksgiving meal, thanks to the generosity of volunteers with both organizations.
“It makes us very proud that our residents stepped up and made sure that the families would have a Thanksgiving," said Loni Green, who works with DeSouza Brown.
“I know there are angels in the outfield, no pun intended, and that it takes a village," said Thomas.
