CARLISLE, Pa. — Police in Cumberland County are warning residents of a suspected scam involving suspects pretending to be ICE agents and other law enforcement entities using "spoofed" phone numbers.
In addition to posing as ICE agents, the suspects are also claiming to be a sergeant with the Carlisle Police Department, the department said Friday.
In one reported phone call on Thursday, the suspects allegedly said the victim had warrants for their arrest and could pay off the warrants with gift cards. The victim obtained several gift cards and provided the numbers to the suspects.
Residents are warned that law enforcement will not ask for gift cards to pay for fines or satisfy warrants.
"Please do not engage with anyone who asks you to purchase gifts and provide the numbers over the phone or to take pictures of the numbers and transmit them through text message or email," the police department said.
