Cumberland County Bureau of Elections begins pre-canvas of mail-in and absentee ballots

More than 125 county staffers began the pre-canvass process, which includes preparing ballots to be scanned, at 7 a.m. Tuesday, the bureau said.

CARLISLE, Pa. — The Cumberland County Bureau of Elections announced that it began the pre-canvass of mail-in and absentee ballots for the General Election Tuesday at 7 a.m.

After being sworn in to uphold the law, perform duties impartially, and not to read, write, or certify any return or vote falsely or fraudulently, the trained county staffers began the pre-canvass process, which includes preparing ballots to be scanned, the bureau said in a press release.

More than 125 county employees will be performing election duties throughout the day until all ballots are counted and the unofficial results are tallied, the bureau said.

“The 322 overseas civilian absentee ballots and the three mail-in ballots that were challenged will not be included in the unofficial count on election night,” said Bureau of Elections Director Bethany Salzarulo. “A decision on the disposition of those ballots will occur during a Board of Elections hearing.”

The Bureau of Elections sent out 48,260 ballots to Cumberland County voters who requested to vote by mail-in or absentee.

As of 7 a.m. Tuesday, 42,439 have been returned, according to the bureau.

Cumberland County residents have until 8 p.m. Tuesday to return their voted mail-in or absentee ballot at the Bureau of Elections, 1601 Ritner Highway, Suite 201, Carlisle.

Unofficial results will be posted on the Bureau of Elections website after 8 p.m. as they become available.
