MECHANICSBURG, Pa. — A Cumberland County man has been charged with homicide by vehicle after police said he was speeding prior to a crash that killed another driver in September.

Mackenzie Hilsinger, 32, of Mechanicsburg, is also charged with aggravated assault by vehicle, reckless driving and driving at unsafe speed in connection to the crash, which occurred on Sept. 4 on the 1200 block of West Trindle Road in Silver Spring Township.

Police charged Hilsinger this week at the conclusion of their investigation of the crash.

A reconstruction of the crash determined Hilsinger's vehicle, a 2017 Ford, was traveling 86 miles per hour five seconds before it struck a 2012 Cadillac driven by Gregory Maloni.

The reconstruction determined Hilsinger slowed to 81 mph and then just over 60 mph when the crash occurred, according to police. It also determined the crash was avoidable had Hilsinger obeyed the 45-mph speed limit.

Maloni was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. He was in cardiac arrest at the scene, police said.

Hilsinger allegedly told police he was late to a work appointment and did not have time to stop or avoid Maloni's vehicle, which was pulling out of a driveway.

In a later interview, Hilsinger claimed he was traveling 50 mph when the crash occurred.

Investigators executed a search warrant on Hilsinger's cell phone, which showed he was texting several people prior to the crash -- including one text that said he would be late to the appointment.

Hilsinger is free on bail and awaiting a preliminary hearing, which is set for Jan. 4, according to court records.
