Nearly 8,000 grams of meth seized in Cumberland County drug investigation, Operation Speed Bump

The Cumberland County DA's Office announced that it has seized 316 grams of crack and crack cocaine, 7,751 grams of methamphetamine and nine grams of heroin.

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Pa. — Cumberland County District Attorney Sean McCormack on Wednesday announced the arrest of 31 suspects for unlawful delivery of controlled substances in the county.

"Members of the Cumberland County Drug Task Force and other law enforcement agencies fanned out across Cumberland and Dauphin counties as part of Operation Speedbump to serve arrest warrants on 31 individuals," McCormack said at a press conference Wednesday morning. "The 31 warrants being served today are in addition to 24 arrests already made leading up to today."

McCormack credited the following police departments for their participation in Operation Speedbump:

  • Cumberland County Drug Task Force
  • Carlisle Borough Police Department
  • Cumberland County Criminal Investigation Division
  • Cumberland County Sheriff's Department
  • Pennsylvania State Police-Carlisle/Troop H-Vice Unit
  • West Shore Regional Police Department
  • Upper Allen Township Police Department
  • Lower Allen Township Police Departmen
  • Mechanicsburg Borough Police Department
  • East Pennsboro Township Police Department
  • Cumberland County Probation
  • United States Marshals
  • Dauphin County Drug Task Force

McCormack also gave special thanks to Magisterial District Judge Daniel Freedman and his staff and the Cumberland County Forensic Division.

"Operation Speedbump began in January 2024 as a result of an increase in overdoses and the emergence of methamphetamine in a form not consistent with locally produced product (what we frequently refer to as ‘home cooks’) but being imported from outside Cumberland County," McCormack said. "What the detectives are telling me is that the quality of the methamphetamine they are seizing is consistent with methamphetamine being produced by cartels in Mexico and smuggled into the United States."

The operation resulted in the following seizures and arrests, according to McCormack:

  • Cocaine/Crack - (316) grams
  • Methamphetamine -(7,751) grams (17 pounds)
  • Heroin/fentanyl -(9) grams
  • Search warrants - (25)
  • Arrests prior to 9/11/24  (24)
  • Arrest warrants on 9/11/24 - (31)
  • Total warrants/arrests - (55)

"The Cumberland County Drug Task Force is comprised of officers from the police departments in Cumberland County that I mentioned above," McCormack said. "This multi-jurisdictional task force is a model of how we need to conduct these types of investigations.  No one department in Cumberland County has the resources to properly conduct investigations of this nature.

"Drug dealers do not respect jurisdictional boundaries; therefore, we cannot have our investigations dictated by those boundaries.  Just as we did today, we partnered with law enforcement agencies and the US Marshalls across the river to assist us in arresting individuals from Dauphin County who frequently come across the river to prey upon Cumberland County residents.

"I want to especially thank the supervisors and commissioners of those jurisdictions that contribute members from their departments to our Drug Task Force.  Without their support we would not be able to conduct an operation like this."

The following jurisdictions form the core of the Cumberland County Drug Task Force, according to McCormack:

  • Lower Allen Township
  • West Shore Regional Police
  • Mechanicsburg Borough
  • Carlisle Borough
  • East Pennsboro Township
  • Upper Allen Township
  • Silver Spring Township
