SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — Police in Cumberland County are warning residents about a suspected phishing scam.
According to Shippensburg Police, there has been an increase in residents reporting they've been victimized by the scam.
A phishing scam is a type of online fraud that involves sending a fake communication that appears to be from a legitimate source.
In the recent cases in Shippensburg, victims reported receiving messages from Microsoft or Windows with a phone number to call for assistance. The scams often include a false claim of unusual activities on the victim's accounts, police said.
The scams conclude with the victims being duped into buying gift cards and relaying the card data by phone, according to police.
Police said that these circumstances will almost always be scams.
