MECHANICSBURG, Pa. — A Cumberland County animal rescue is looking for help treating a dog that was left unattended in a garage over the weekend.
Staff members at Speranza Animal Rescue in Mechanicsburg were contacted Saturday night about the dog, who was found locked in an unheated garage without food or water.
Speranza staff members believe the dog, who they named Ramona, is a German Shepherd, but "honestly we can't be sure because of the condition she is in," the organization said on Facebook.
The dog is extremely emaciated but is responding to care by Speranza volunteers.
"We know one thing for sure," Speranza's post continues. "This girl is a warrior. A fighter."
The organization has already raised more than $8,000 to help treat Ramona since it first posted about her Sunday morning, according to Facebook.
Volunteers have already taken Ramona to receive veterinary care, Speranza said. In addition to her malnourished state, she was suffering from ear infections.
Ramona is now on a feeding program and is expected to make a full but slow recovery, Speranza said Monday.
"We are going to now show her there was a reason she fought," Speranza said. "You are now safe. You are now loved. You are now free from the horrors."
Speranza staff said Monday that they are not sure if the former owner of the dog will be charged.
