Customers celebrate the reopening of a Moon Dancer Winery

A popular York County winery reopened its doors on Friday after a court order shut down the business earlier in June.

YORK COUNTY, Pa. — Business is back at Moon Dancer Vineyards and Winery in Lower Windsor Township.

“It feels amazing, I love it, I love it here, it’s great scenery, keep it,” said Mike Miller from Lancaster County.

Miller has been a customer for years and says it’s always been the go-to place for wine and brick oven pizza.

“We even bring our kids here and they love coming to see the grapes that’re growing right over there, they love the live bands, it’s just a perfect area for us, it honestly is,” Miller said.

A York County judge ordered the winery to shut down by June 10 after neighbors filed a civil suit against the winery, claiming the business was operating illegally in a residential area.

The order was appealed and rescinded, allowing the winery to reopen while litigation continues.

For performer Lisa Rettew, reopening means having a gig.

“We weren’t sure if we were going to be playing here today, so when we heard from Jim and said everything was a go, we were really excited about and glad to hear things were looking out and he could reopen,” Rettew said.

Rettew and her band 3 Below have performed at the venue for years.

She says a permanent shutdown would’ve impacted other local artists who perform there.

“We play here like 4 or 5 times a year and we come here and see bands play, so we’re not only a band that comes here and plays, but we are also customers that come here and hang out,” Rettew said.

The owner, Jim Miller, was unavailable for an interview due to his fulfilling orders halted by the shutdown.

Miller did provide a statement after receiving permission to reopen his business.

“For two decades, we have been honored to serve this community, and it broke our hearts to have to close our doors,” he said. “Today, we celebrate not just this second chance to reopen, but we also celebrate the thousands of friends and neighbors who have stood by us and supported us during this difficult time.”

FOX43 reached out to the attorney representing plaintiffs in the civil suit for comment but did not receive a response.
