HARRISBURG, Pa. — Appalachian Brewing Company on Thursday announced the release of a new beer that pays homage to a Harrisburg brewing legend.

Silver Stock Lager, the latest addition to ABC's beer menu, was first crafted by Robert H. Graupners Brewery in 1933, the Harrisburg-based brewery said.

Its re-release at ABC pays tribute to Harrisburg's rich brewing heritage, the brewery said.

"With meticulous attention to detail, the brewery has carefully reconstructed the Silver Stock recipe and logo, ensuring that the essence of the original brew is maintained, while infusing a modern twist to appeal to today’s discerning consumers," ABC said in a press release. "In a wave of heady, high-octane brews, Silver Stock stands out as a crushable German lager; its lower ABV, crisp finish, and hint of malt, is sure to keep customers coming back for more."

Many breweries have come and gone in the Keystone State, but few were as storied as R.H. Graupners Brewery, according to ABC. With well-established roots in the late 1800s, much of the brewery’s success came after the untimely death of its namesake in 1905.

Despite the challenges of a male-dominated field and the constraints of prohibition, Robert’s widow, Marie Graupner managed a profitable brewery for 46 years, ABC said.

Amongst their most successful brews include X-tra Fine Beer and Silver Stock Lager. A Graupner’s advertisement in 1933 touted “Both brands are known coast-to-coast as those ‘famous Harrisburg beers.’”

While Harrisburg has been home to many small breweries in the 19th and 20th centuries, few ever fully recovered from prohibition, and even R.H. Graupners closed in 1951. Exactly 46 years later, ABC opened its doors on Cameron Street, a block from where the former Graupner Brewing Complex once stood.

"To honor the foundation laid by other Harrisburg craft breweries, Appalachian Brewing Company created Jolly Scot Ale, a flagship tribute to a beer of the same name produced by R.H. Graupners many years prior," the company said. "ABC eagerly continues that celebrated legacy with the reproduction of Silver Stock, a crisp, easy-drinking lager."

Cans of Silver Stock will be available at all Appalachian Brewing Company locations as well as participating distributors, starting this week.
