HARRISBURG, Pa. — A Mega Adoption Event involving the Humane Society of Harrisburg and other affiliates with the Brandywine Valley SPCA over the weekend resulted in more than 1,100 pet adoptions in just over two days, the BVSPCA said Monday.

A total of 1,115 pets were adopted from shelters across four states, the organization said.

A total of 549 dogs, 557 cats, and nine other animals found new homes.

The BVSPCA's 18th Mega Adoption Event was held in partnership with national non-profit Petco Love, BOBS from Skechers, and co-sponsored by Discover.

The events have found homes for more than 19,000 animals over nine years, according to BVSPCA.

Adopted animals ranged from puppies and kittens to seniors and long-time shelter residents across all BVSPCA campuses and partner shelters.

“What an amazing two days for pets in need. So many families came out to give these great companions a second chance, not just at our campuses, but to the partner locations who joined our cause,” said Adam Lamb, BVSPCA Chief Executive Officer. “Updates from families are already flooding in, sharing their new cat or dog’s first hours at home, and their stories of how this has changed their lives too.”

The BVSPCA hosted the Mega Adoption Event at BVSPCA locations in West Chester, Plymouth Meeting, New Castle, Dover, Georgetown, and at the Animal Rescue Center.

BVSPCA Affiliate partners Humane Society of Harrisburg Area and Animal Adoption Center (AAC) in Lindenwold, New Jersey also participated in the weekend’s event, as well as several other shelter partners including Humane Animal Partners Delaware (HAP), Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh, Animal Care Shelter for Kent County in Maryland, Animal Rescue League of Berks County, Homeward Bound Pet Adoption Center, South Jersey Regional Animal Shelter, and Montgomery County Animal Shelter (TX), who brought animals north to participate.

“We’re grateful to be able to help other shelters tap into the adoption potential in this region, particularly shelters in areas where there are more homeless pets than adopters,” Lamb said.
