Capital Area Greenbelt detour in Harrisburg remains in place

As the weather warms up, more people will be using the trail. Officials are reminding them of an ongoing detour.

HARRISBURG, Pa. — With spring around the corner, the Capital Area Greenbelt in Harrisburg is getting busier.

But this year, there’s a pretty extensive detour those using the trail need to be aware of.

“[The] Veterans Outreach of Pennsylvania development is going in and then another one has been proposed," said Douglas Hill, president of the Capital Area Greenbelt Association.

The Veterans Grove community will house homeless veterans.

It's being built near the Greenbelt, forcing the detour that takes people onto Sycamore and Cameron Streets, then back on the trail.

Some people have raised concerns about safety.

“We recognize that both Sycamore and Cameron are high-traffic [roads] but we’re trying to give people appropriate directional signs, hope they stick to the sidewalks and keep it a safe route," said Hill.

The detour has been in place since November of last year.

There’s no timetable for how long the trail will be closed.

The City of Harrisburg is working with the Greenbelt Association to determine a future path for the trail.

“We’ve identified a couple of alternate routes," said Hill. "There are a couple that are better than others certainly and are safer, more scenic and stick to the riverfront a little better and that’s what we’re hoping to accomplish.”
